Back in Christchurch, NZ- What Now?

It’s been nearly three weeks since I arrived back in NZ after 314 days away or 10 months, 10 days. For the numbers geeks out there: 27,129,600 seconds 452,160 minutes 7536 hours 314 days 44 weeks and 6 days 86.03% of a common year (365 days) So what now? Well... read more

BLOG ABOUT PLANNING, EQUIPPING, MUSINGS AND EXECUTION OF ‘BURNING RUBBER USA/CANADA 2016

How did this idea of traveling by motorcycle for 6 months come about, I hear you ask?

Now that’s a good question and I guess this trip has been at least 5 years in the making.

Like most of us, we dream about adventure, getting out there and seeing new and interesting places, although the reality is, we work Mon-Fri and basically get ourselves into a rut. Which while this may be comfortable and safe, it’s pretty damn boring and soul sapping.

I’ve always dreamed of doing a motorcycle adventure and in 2012, I planned on doing a trip in 2014, to break the Guinness World Record for the longest motorcycle journey in a single country.

My plan was to use this to raise money for Canteen in the process. As this was way out of my comfort zone, I decided to do a boxing contender’s course at 1 More Round gym in Christchurch, to condition myself to feel the fear and do it anyway.

I have to say, it was tough in every way and I’m not a natural fighter either although the end result was about $650 raised for Canteen and a fractured rib for my troubles.

But it was good, I learned a lot, especially about people as I had been working with someone, who was recording all my training and sparing as I wanted to make an inspirational video, to show people about giving things a go.

Unfortunately I was let down by the guy who did the filming, so that idea didn’t get off the ground.

Jump forward past another contenders course, change of job and to 2015.

My current work is still in the quake recovery side of things and after deciding to sell my house, to ease financial pressures and having no commitments, I have decided that I would get out of ‘Dodge’ for a while and see the world.

This has especially become important since learning that a fellow Christchurch motorcyclist who has traveled around the USA, Aus and NZ writing books, passed away age 56.

I’m 47, so damn my depression, I’m going to do this.
